The drive unit is the power core of a drop forged rivetless chain conveyor. In extreme-duty service, it must deliver high torque reliably under heavy loads, long runs, and harsh environments.
Caterpillar (Track) Drive: Mounted on a straight track section, engages the chain via a powered cat chain with drive dogs. Best for long runs and high chain pull; more energy-efficient than sprocket drives.
Sprocket Drive: Mounted at a horizontal turn, uses a large sprocket to engage the chain directly. Requires at least 90° wrap. Drawback: high torque demand, needing a larger reducer.
Common specifications:
| Track Size | Chain | Max Pull | Dog Spacing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3" | X-348 | 3,000 lbs | 12" |
| 4" | X-458 | 4,000 lbs | 8" |
| 6" | X-678 | 5,000 lbs | 12" |
Shear Hub Protection: Shear pin fails first during a jam, protecting gearbox, motor, and chain.
Heavy-Duty Cat Chain: Solid forged, induction-hardened drive dogs; average ultimate strength up to 58,000 lbs.
Multi-Drive Configurations: For high pull or long systems, with backup drives for failover.
Variable Speed Control: VFD with ~10:1 turndown ratio.
Frame Options: Right/left hand, floating/fixed/inverted styles.
X-Type: All components heat-treated, flexible, carbon or alloy steel.
H-Type: Bar loop chain with flat steel sidebars for weld-on attachments.
Calculate chain pull from total load, friction, and incline.
Choose caterpillar for long runs/high pull; sprocket for turn installations.
Specify shear hub protection.
Consider multi-drive when pull exceeds 5,000 lbs or multiple elevation changes exist.
Match drive unit to chain number (X-348, X-458, X-678, etc.).
